Gus the Tortoise

Here is Gus on July 1 (Canada Day), 2006, age 84, having a stroll and a snack in the backyard at the Museum of Natural History.

Gus was born in 1922. He has lived at the Museum of Natural History on Summer St. in Halifax for over fifty years -- a Haligonian for sure.

Gus even makes the news in Toronto!

Gus the gopher turtle
celebrates birthday

Several generations of admirers
turned out to celebrate the birth-
day of Gus the gopher turtle in
Halifax yesterday.

At roughly 85, he's a reminder to
children and adults of the durabili-
ty of this species, provided their
habitat isn't damaged. Gus was
purchased in Florida by a former
curator of the Nova Scotia Muse-
um in the early 1940s, and has
made the museum his home for six
decades. In Florida, the turtles will
soon be listed as endangered.
