Chocolate Lake Hotel

This hotel, to my mind, is one of the best in Halifax, although it is not inexpensive.  I stayed there in 2009 when amenities such as the pool and gym were still under construction, and rates reflected the unfinished state.  Since completion, rates have risen dramatically, but if you are not on a budget, then this is certainly a hotel worthy of consideration.

The theme is definitely CHOCOLATE.  It is located on the shore of Halifax's well-hidden Chocolate Lake, a body of water I am emnbarrassed to admit I did not even know existed prior to staying at this hotel.  Chocolate Lake is near the Armdale Rotary, at the end of the Northwest Arm.  The hotel is located at 20 St. Margaret's Bay Road.  Only one side of the hotel overlooks the lake.  As far as I am concerned, a room on the other side, facing the road, is not worthwhile.  Most of the charm of this hotel is its view of the lake.  Hotel patrons can swim in the lake, but there is no lifeguard.  Across the lake from the hotel there is a tiny public beach, accessible off Herring Cove Road.  If you are driving, take care with the Armdale Rotary.  It can be tricky.

The hotel itself evokes chocolate at every turn, from chocolate scent in the lobby, to various chocolate shades in the decor, to the resident canine hostess, a Chocolate Lab named Cocoa.  Cocoa lives at the hotel and, as far as I could see, is extremely well cared for.  Dogs are allowed in this hotel, so you need to be dog-friendly in order to enjoy a stay here.  Cocoa sometimes even stays overnight with guests she knows!
